INCEIF University IFFL Boot Camp Part 715 August 2024The boot camp ended unofficially with the last session of engagement with the students on the Future Trends in Islamic Finance by Mr Norfadelizan Abdul Rahman who was the former CEO of Maybank Syariah Indonesia and Dr Kinan Salim, an associate professor of INCEIF. Mr Norfadelizan starts his speech by raising the issue of orating ability among students. Students must take every opportunity to improve their oratory skills. He said that "Life is a building block. What you put at the bottom determines on how you look at the top". Thus, highlighting the importance of orating ability as an important foundation for future purposes. He added that Malaysia is called the champion in Islamic Finance. But he asked us to think again, "Are we really living up to the name?" Hence, he asked us to ask ourselves, "What do I have to do to myself now so that in 10 years I'll win?" He then left us with invaluable advice that was to always keep up with the latest issues and become an individual that stands out by acquiring skills that are different from others. Before the session ended, Dr Kinan enlightened us with his speech on ESG and the Sustainability Train. As we know companies are putting their attention to ESG hence the existence of Sustainability Department in companies to focus solely on that purpose. Dr Kinan also highlighted the importance of mastering the GenAI and encouraged us to harness the skills that cannot be taken away by them by being innovative and socially connected with people. And I believe that is all of my sharing for the intensive two-day boot camp. What I write is solely for my purpose and to share the benefits with my connections and followers. Obviously, I still have so many flaws in my sharing and I still have much more to learn as during my second day of this programme, I found my brain more exhausting than the first. But it was the kind of exhaustion that was fulfilling and satisfying, knowing that you know more about topics that you already know, and you know something about topics that you've just heard for the first time maybe. Thank you to all the speakers for the insightful sharing. May Allah bless you always.Thank you to Nureen for the pics, as always.

INCEIF University IFFL Boot Camp Part 615 August 2024Continuing from the last session, we then had Ustaz Adli Saad, an instructor at Alkhadeem, with us talking about Ethical Leadership: The Prophectic Model. He started it with a sharing of verse 21 of Surah Al-Ahzab which illustrates Rasulullah PBUH as an example for mankind. He PBUH was an exceptional leader during his time and until now that human being has ever had. He PBUH was recognized as the 100 most influential individuals in the world, and he PBUH was the first in list., subhanallah. Ustaz Adli then shared with us what made Rasulullah PBUH a successful and admirable leader at that, all of them supported by hadeeths and seerahs;1. Wisdom in action and making decisions2. Necessary bravery: Be bold and courageous3. Steadiness and balance: Physically strong and solid4. Attentive to the strength of the epeople around us: Know their strength and utilize them for the goodness5. Strong personality: Be humble towards others6. Mercy towards his followers: Give advice but don't scold, whine and nag won't solve problems, don't blame others even when they're in the wrong7. Consult with those who are near to youAnd then after our lunch break, we had Dr Nurrul Iiyana from CGC Malaysia sharing about Personal Development and Networking Skills. As a figure who specializes in talent development and management, Dr Nurrul gave us an outlook in the world of career. I would like to summarize her sharing in a few points. 1. She stressed out that to employers, employees are valuable assets of an organization. As employees, one must not do what they are asked of, instead they should do their job according to the job description.2. Being an employee, how one interacts on social media has very significant effects to the company.3. Employees must always think how they can add value to the team or for the company. 4. One must make the time to learn GenAI as it can be used to ease the workloads of companies. 5. Learn Design Thinking in the Waterfall Method to maximize quality, cost and time for projects.6. One must be humble of their achievements on social media. 7. Read the Future Skills Framework (FSF) by the AICB (FSF for those in the Malaysian financial sector) that serves as notes to understand better about details on job roles, main skills needed, career pathways etc.See you tomorrow! Credits to Dr Nurrul and Ustaz Adli for the pics. p/s: I know I promised that this was the last, but let's keep it for tomorrow😆

INCEIF University IFFL Boot Camp Part 515 August 2024We then jumped to the next session on a practical workshop on Preparing to Be A Leader with Dr Ziyaad Mahomed and Prof Baharom Abdul Hamid. The workshop begins when Prof Baharom asked us what are the sustainability standards that we know of. There were answers; ESG, SDG, CSR and then there was silence as everyone thought that was IT. Then, he said, "Is that all?" The room was again in silence as we thought of other standards that we could've missed out. He continued, "Then what about the Islamic standard; the Maqasid Shariah?" And the latest standard, the Value-Based Intermediation. The question implied was to say that the Westerners could come up with lots of standards and there would always be improvements and new standards, but the Maqasid will always remain the same, till the end of time. With that, whatever that we plan to innovate for the betterment of a product, transaction or system, do so but within the boundaries of Shariah and be creative while being at it. We don't have to follow the norm.Prof Baharom also instigated us to spark thoughts in the minds of the other people around us and start discussions by writing about what we observe around us using the knowledge that we gained in classes - simple topic such as "How a "makcik goreng pisang" (an aunt selling banana fritters) could be helped by social finance?" At a student's level, that will suffice to provoke others' minds to think further.Followed by Dr Ziyaad who shared with us a case study of a country that succeeded in its plantation as a source of income and at the same time helping supply food to its people. But after the head of the project was being promoted and another person took over the project, it failed. Dr Ziyaad asked us to think on what was supposed to be done for the plantation to nourish. After students gave each other's opinions, Dr Ziyaad continued noting leaders must have networks, because they know their limit and they will need others' expertise in areas that they are not well-versed. In this case, the new head of the project must refer and keep in touch with its connections for enquiries on how to ensure the continuous succession of the plantation. Second, the former head of the project must make a succession plan because he knows eventually that he will move to a higher rank, and someone will sit in his former position. In short, leaders must think for the future and prepare for it. Dr Ziyaad then shared with us on how to make a learning and development plan using an acronym; SEPMSS.S - Self-DevelopmentE - Education and CertificationP - Practical ExperienceM - MentorS - Specialized TrainingS - Soft SkillsDr Ziyaad left us with a sentence that knocked some sense into us, "Use artificial intelligence to create real impact. Don't use real intelligence to create artificial impact". See you soon for the last part tomorrow, in shaa allah.

INCEIF University IFFL Boot Camp Part 415 August 2024We started off the next morning with a sharing on the Career Paths in Islamic Finance by Mr Kemal Rizadi Arbi, CPIF, Dr Maya Puspa Rahman and Dr. Muhammad Syahmi Mohd Karim, Ph.D, CA (M), ACMA, CGMA. The first speaker was Mr Kemal who shared his vast experience in the world of investment banking. His father was an architect, but he wanted to be in the finance industry, which amazed me and makes me even more confident that this society is slowly moving towards the acceptance and openness of their kids pursuing fields that are different from their parents, as I am in the same situation as Mr Kemal. He shared that he is currently working for the government of Oman. He explained that it was a very tough decision to make, that was to go out of his comfort zone and accept this international position. Accepting this position means that one must make sacrifices to become a global citizen. From that, I understood that to go that extra mile, you need to leap out of your comfort zone because great things never come out of them. He also shared that Malaysians should grab the opportunities of going global because our expertise is needed and is highly demanded all around the world. Continued with a sharing by Dr Maya Puspa where she initiated her sharing with a question of WHY as the first point and the question was focused on the ladies, as the answer is quite evident for the men as they hold the responsibility as breadwinners of the family. A friend in the crowd answered that she wanted to contribute to society. And that was the big why needed to survive in this industry because this Why is what helps us women get through the tough times and decisions, says Dr Maya. The next point is CHOICES vs OPPORTUNITIES. She shared that she had the opportunity of residing at Sharjah, UAE. It was challenging as a mother with kids and deciding to migrate there as a whole family. I must admit that I do have concerns about this too as I one day will build a family of my own too. I was relieved to have been given exposure on this matter if I were to have the opportunity of becoming a global citizen one day, in shaa allah. ABILITIES vs ATTRIBUTES is the third point where Dr Maya shared some hacks on dealing with people on an international level. The last point is VISION because recruiters would want to know how candidates picture themselves in the long run when they apply for work. They will also look if the candidates possess technical skills as an added value that differentiates them from others that are also applying for the same position. Dr Maya then ends her sharing with a gem that I would gladly share with you. HOW TO GO GLOBAL? Get local experience first for three to five years and digest the Islamic financial system well.Till the next post. p/s: I stopped for a few days to take care of my mom who had just finished surgery, alhamdulillah.

IFFL Boot Camp Part 314 August 2024Let's continue where we left off. As for Mr Hamidi A Razak, he stressed out on the importance of having an outstanding attitude and the qualities of wanting to contribute to the company at the workplace. It is better to have an employee who is very capable but stay only for a short period of time than having a loyal but non-competent employee. Sharing his experience currently as Chief Risk Officer of Bank Muamalat, a distinct ability that he would like in an employee would be how one could explain a jargon to the public. I find this very interesting as I also have a hard time in explaining certain jargons in layman terms. I think this is a very important skill to master as it helps the public understand better about the products offered by banks and non-banking institutions, for example, how do you explain Tawarruq to your grandmother. The last session of the day was with Mr mohamed syairoz with his simplistic slides of presentation because he said that only points are needed to be in the slide because what makes it power is him, hehe. It is true, though. I like his mindset already. He gave a crash course on Developing Leadership and Communication Skills where he highlighted that many people communicate, but few connect. I find this very true, as not many talk to connect to a deeper level. Only when we establish connections and relationships, workload becomes easier and smooth which brings us to ways on how to connect with people. One of them is through body language as 55% of the information that we receive is by visual. Body languages can be broken up into several parts, one of them is eye contact. It is said that we should avoid looking repeatedly at the same person which reminds me that I've always looked repeatedly at the same people when conducting a ceremony because I felt comfortable. When asked to Mr Syairoz is it okay to keep doing so, he said that it is normally fine to be doing that. It only means that we have established a point of comfort (a jargon used in the discipline of public speaking). He just corrected me a proper way of looking repeatedly, that is come back to look at that person every few minutes. It is wrong only when your eyes are glued towards a certain person. You could tell how much fun I had just by the length of my sharing, don't you? Apologies, I can't hide my excitement even though it's finished a few days already. See you again for the sharing of Day 2 at INCEIF University. 📸 Nureen Najihah thank you for the pictures. The last picture is a picture with my UM peeps Nureen Najihah hafiza johari Amir Haidar Abdul Samad Safwan Rahiman
